Wolf Facts

Wolf Packs- wolves live in a pack. there are the male and female alphas (leaders), the beta, the subordinate, the juvenile, and the lowest ranking, the omega. wolf pups play- fight a lot. this is to find their ranking. eventually, they stop. they win over each other, and find their place. wolves respect the alphas  by lowering their ears, whining, or licking the alphas' muzzles. but sometimes, a wolf decides to move up. this starts a fight. usually, the fight ends with no serious wounds. wolves knowing their place creates harmony in the pack.

Pups- the alpha pair usually has the pups. pups are born blind and deaf. their ears and eyes eventually open. all of  the wolves in the pack help take care of the pups. wolf pups play- fight a lot. this is to find their ranking. eventually, they stop. they win over each other, and find their place. wolf pups have a brownish coat at the begining. at first, they drink their mom's milk. then, they lick thei'r parents' chops and  the parent regergitates food. finnally, they eat solid meat. they can hunt at the age of 6 months.

Senses - the wolf's greatest sense is smell. it can smell prey from more than a mile away! they use that big honker to communicate and to find prey. a wolf can take a few sniffs at another wolf  and tell: where you have been, what age you are, which pack you are from, how your feeling, and if your pregnant. also, wolves mark their territory. this can be done by urinating, scratching, and scent rolling. wolves also have scent glands on their paw pads. these all leave your scent behind, so any other wolf who comes knows this is your territory, stay away. they also have keen hearing. their ears can move. they can usually hear prey, but they can also hear other wolves howling.

Hunting- wolves use their nose to track prey. they take on anything that's meat, from a mouse to a moose. when it comes to deer or moose, they usually howl to let other wolves "know". there is a way they hunt livestock such as deer, moose, carabou, elk, etc. wolf packs search for the weakest one. then, they chase it and bite at it. but the prey has defenses, too. wolves really gotta watch out for those hooves! a moose's hooves can kill a wolf. anyway, when the prey is killed, the alpha pair eats first. then, the rest of the pack joins in to eat.

Endangered- wolves are endangered. the reintroduction to wolves in yellowstone was helpful, but people are killing wolves again. and they are killing wolves while they are in yellowstone. yes, the wolves kill our livestock. but we dont have to kill them back. there are other ways to prevent wolves from snacking on the sheep. and people think wolves are big and bad. but they are NOT. WOLVES DO NOT KILL PEOPLE UNLESS THEY ARE RABID, STARVING, OR YOU ARE TOO CLOSE TO THEIR YOUNG. OTHERWISE WOLVES ARE SCARED OF PEOPLE. so please, accept the wolfs' flaws. help save the wolves at www.defendersofwildlife.org
